LEAVE WITHOUT PAY
TEACHER OBJECTORS POWER OF DISMISSAL (By Tclesrapn.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday Teachers who lodge appeals as conscientious objectors, or who become military defaulters, will be put on leave of absence without pay for the duration of the war, or a defaulter may be dismissed. These provisions are contained in new regulations passed today by the Executive Council. The Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, said the regulations represented the unanimous opinion of a conference of chairmen and other representatives of all education boards in New Zealand, and the decisions were also endorsed by the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute and other teachers’ organisations.
Teachers who lodged appeals before the regulations came into operation are brought within their
scope retrospectively. This means that a teacher who iodged an appeal before the new regulations came into force will be deemed to be on leave of absence without pay, but payments already made to him will not be affected. Vacancies occurring in consequence of the regulations are deemed to be war vacancies and appointments to fill them will be made accordingly.
“ The regulations do not apply to conscientious objectors or military defaulters who for the time being are serving in the armed forces,” said the Minister, “ and a teacher who has brought himself within the scope of the regulations is removed from them when he accepts service in the armed forces. His rights under the Teachers’ Emergency Regulations, 1941. are restored to him as a member of the forces as far as is possible without prejudice to the rights of others.J Yes, tomorrow's the day. and what a day for the kiddies —Dear Old Santa arrives at Hooker and Kingston's front entrance at 3.30 p.m. to ■ welcome all boys and girls and theii ■ parents too to the “Land of Fairy ; Tales” down in the cave.
