AUCKLAND PREPARES
ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS BARK
TARGET TOWED BY PLANE (By Telegraph —l-resa Associations AUCKLAND, Wednesday Anti-aircraft guns went into action between 3.0 and 4.0 o’clock this morning when a practice with live shells was carried out. The target was a drogue towed by an aeroplane. Although the clouds were low, searchlights picked up the target several times as it flew over the city and suburbs.
The sounds of the guns awakened many people, who were reassured by E.P.S. workers that the shooting was merely practice.
Brigadier D. H. Bell, D. 5.0., officer commanding the northern military district, said today that the practice was effective. “Valuable experience was gained although it was necessary to restrict the firing in order to observe safety,” he added. The secretary of the Emergency Precautions Service, Mr K. L. Usmar, said that a magnificent response was made by wardens who were notified by telephone late last night.
