MEAT POSITION
MORE SATISFACTORY QUANTITY FOR STORAGE The fact that the meat position was better than had been expected was indicated by the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, in Hamilton this morning. It was expected at one time, he said, to have 180,000 tons of meat in store at the end of the season, but now it was estimated that there would be only 108,000 tons, of which 6000 tons would be set aside for canning. The position had improved partly because of the fact that the Dominion had been able to get away more shipments than expected and partly because of the canning and boning of meat. The butter storage position was still causing some concern, said the Minister, but negotiations were under way to meet this problem. Referring to the public pronouncement made by a member of the Australian Dairy Board concerning a British Government increase in the price of cheese to Australia of 5s 9d a cwt, Mr Barclay said the New Zealand Government was still carrying out negotiations in regard to cheese. Froducers should be patient until the Government was able to make a definite announcement.
