VICHY STATEMENT CHARGE AGAINST BRITAIN LONDON, July 29 T!io Vichy Government has issued a statement informing the public of th 9 scope of the consequences of the French-Japanese agreement on IndoChna, says the Times correspondent on the French frontier. It aims to appease public opinion, which is showing much uneasiness at the prospect of losing yet another colony, although Marsha! Petain and Admiral Dar.’ar. declared that the Empire would be defended by all means. Propaganda is attempting to show that Britain, with American help, was about to steal another colony from France. Marshal Petain and Admiral Darlan have so far succeeded in imposing their foreign policy on the Government, but opposition is growing even in the Cabinet. In Washington Mr Sumner Welles said the United States has not given an assurance to Japan that the licences will be issued to permit of a couinuance of trade. Ciearance will be given to Japanese ships under present conditions. a L -J BATTLE IN MARSHES NAZI FORCE ANNIHILATED LONDON, July 29 A dispatch from the Ukraine to Moscow described a pitched battle tn the marshes, in which a Russian regiment annihilated a large German Force. General Budenny personally assumed command immediately before the attack, at the conclusion of which the marshes were filled with German corpses. TAXI DRIVER ATTACKED AUCKLAND, Wednesday About 9.30 last night a taxi driver. Jack Stewart Young, aged 40, was attacked by an unknown man travelling as a passenger i i the rear seat of his taxi, in Hackett Street, Ponsonby, and was struck three blows on the head from behind. His assailant jumped from the taxi as it was stopping and ascaped. Young had two lacerated wounds o i his head and bruises and abrasions on his forehead. The police wore early cn the scere and searched for the assailant without success.
