RAILWAYMAN RETIRES
AFTER 40 YEARS’ SERVICE MR W. HUGHES HONOURED Mr William Hughes, for the past three years yardmaster at Frankton Junction railway station, retired from the service on Saturday after 40 years with the department. To mark the occasion he was entertained to a complimentary dinner at the Frankton Hotel on Saturday evening by his fellow members of the staff, the stationmaster, Mr J. C. Scoullar, presiding. Mr Hughes was presented with a gold watch, suitably inscribed, and Mrs Hughes with a silver fruit dish. Mr Hughes joined the railway service at Wanganui in March, 1901, as a boy porter, and thereafter he served in the various grades at New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Woodville (three times), Petone, Welling-
