MISSION IN LONDON MR WILLIAM GOODFEI.LOW SYDNEY, May 12 The Daily Telegraph's New York correspondent cables that IY!r William Goodf el.'ow, managing director of Amalgamated Da.ries. Limited, Auckland, stated that ships carrying New Zealand dairy products to England were sunk causing the food to accumulate in New Zealand. Mr Goodfellow, who is flying to London in an endeavour to obtain shipping space for surplus New Zealand primary products, said that 20 ships with refrigerated space would relieve the position. LABOURS MAJORITY NEW COUTH WALES ELECTIONS SYDNEY, May 12 The Premier, Mr Mair, announced that the Government would resign as socn as possible. On the latest figures the probable state of the parties in the new parliament will be: United Australia and United Country Party 30, Official Labour 50; Independents 2, doubtful 8. Labour won 11 seats from the United Australia Party, three from the United Country Party and four new seats created by the redistribution cf electoral boundaries. The Ministers, Messrs Marlin, Primrose, Tonking and Yco, have been defeated but the fate of Messrs Reid and F.tzsomons is still doubtful. The Daily Telegraph expects Labour to have 58 seats in the new Parliament. If this is so Labour would have the greatest majority cn record. Mr W. M: Correy (Official Labour) who defeated the sitting United Australia Party member in Kogarah, is the first Victoria Cross member of the State Parliament. LIFE ON RAIDER SYDNEY, May 11 The sinking or capture of nine ships by the German raider in the Indian Ocean is confirmed by Mr Charles Jeffries, who has returned to Sydney after having shared weeks of captivity with 193 other seamen from the raiders’ victims. His ship the Commissaire Ramel was sunk by the raider on September 20, 1940, and three men who were prisoners with him in the holds of the Nazi ship died later in a prison camp in Italian Scmaliland. Mr Jeffries said that the raider was the Hansa liner Atlantis, of about 14,000 tons. She was disguised as a Japanese trader and used a Japanese name. He confirmed the American report of January 5 that the victims of the raider were the British-owned ships Scientist, Kemmendine, City of Bagdad, King City, Athel King, and Benarty; the French ship Commissaire Ramel; the Norwegian motorship Tinnara and the Yugoslav steamer Durmitor. Mr Jeffries said that to intimidate their captives the crew of the raider lined them on the deck and splattered it with bullets from machine-guns mounted on the bridge.
