DAIRY INCREASE

NEW ZEALAND PRODUCTION 17J PER CENT IN BUTTERFAT . The annual report of the South Island Dairy Association refers to an increase of 15,307 tons of butter and 28,844 tons of cheese graded in New Zealand for the year ended March 31. A total of 138,745 tons of creamery butter, 2766 tons of whey butter and 114,355 tons of cheese was graded in New Zealand during that period. Converted into the butterfat equivalent, an increase in production of about 17£ per cent is indicated.

This expansion, the report states, is most satisfactory, particularly in view of the fact that the preceding three years showed a progressive decline. The result has been achieved in spite of the shortage of labour and other severe handicaps. The position has now been reached, it is added, when a further diminution of labour must have a serious effect on production.
