Query Column

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS Requests for information on matters relating to the home and the interests of women generally, will be answered in this column each Friday. Letters will not now be answered through the post, except where expressly stated and on receipt of a stamped addressed envelope. All inquiries should be addressed to “Query Column,” c/o The Lady Editor, Waikato Times, Hamilton, and the answers will appear under the initials of the sender.

The Correct Procedure L.P. (Te Awamutu).—A man should be introduced to a woman, not a woman to a man; young men and women to their seniors in age and position. Men should not offer to shake hands with a woman on being introduced. The advance must come from the woman, if at all. Bread Without Yeast P.G. (Otorohanga).—Quite satisfactory bread can be made without yeast and the following is a good tested recipe:—lib finely ground wholemeal flour, £pt water (more if necessary), 1 tablespoon lactic sugar dissolved in the water (other sugar may be used), 1 teaspoon cream of tartar, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 1 teaspoon salt. (The lactic sugar is always handy and it is much more wholesome. It gives the bread a delicious flavour). Bake I hour in hot oven, reducing heat after \ hour. Removal of Scorch Marks P.P. (Hamilton). —Scorch marks on white linen may be easily removed by dabbing with peroxide of hydrogen. Then sponge with cold water and iron until dry. An Excellent Cement JJJ. (Frankton). —A good universal cement for joining glass and rearly all household articles, can be made by putting goz of powdered isinglass into a small bottle and just covering it with ascetic acid. Place the bottle uncorked in a basin of hot water and occasionally shake until the isinglass has dissolved and been absorbed by the acid. This cement solidifies when cold, but can be melted quickly by standing the bottle in the hot water. Letter of Introduction B.K. /(HamiLton). —In giving a letter of introduction the correct procedure is to leave it unsealed.
