EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY

SIR R. HEATON RHODES L (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday A message from the King was included among many congratulations received today by the Hon Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., on the occasion of his 80th birthday. His Majesty’s message was as follows: —“The Queen and I send you our warm congratulations on your 80th birthday. We have recollections of the time when you accompanied us during our visit to New Zealand and we send you our best wishes for your future health and happiness.’* Sir Heaton, who was born at Lyttelton, was educated at Oxford and practised as a barrister in London. I'A 1890 he contested the Heathcote seat and from 1899 to 1902 was member for Ellesmere, which seat he regained in 1905 and held until 1925. In 1926 he was appointed to the Legislative Council. After holding a captaincy in the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry he served in the South African War. Sir Heaton was Postmaster-General from 1912 to 1915 and Minister of Defence from 1920 to 1926.
