BALLOT CASES

NO. 2 BOARD SITTING TE AWAMUTU APPEALS ALL CONCERN FARMS The No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board, Messrs S. L. Paterson, S.M. (chairman), A. E. Manning and R. Coulter, held its first sitting at Te Awamutu today, when all appeals were in respect of farmers. George S. Hall, farmer, Hairini, appealed on behalf of a son, George W. S. Hall, who was operating a dairy farm at Paterangi of 146 acres, partly improved. After hearing the evidence and questioning both father and son, the Board dismissed the appeal, but the reservist will not be called up for service before May 1. N. R. Mathers, whose father, Joshua Mathers, appealed for him, was said to be farming 274 acres at Ngaroto. Counsel, Mr W. P. Gray, Hamilton, said that a brother had been working with N. R. Mathers on the farm, but was now in the Air Force. An adjournment sine die was granted. Willing To Serve Herbert Allan Alexander Dixon, of Pirongia, asked that he be not called for military duties before May 31. He was milking 80 cows on 104 acres. One brother was already serving with the reinforcements, and appellant also was desirous of rendering service. He had attempted to get competent sharemilkers, or, as an alternative, to induce members of the family to return to the farm, but all were in essential occupations. The Board commented that this appellant was obviously a good farmer, and in adjourning the appeal until July 1 the chairman remarked that it might be better, in the interests of the country’s production, if appellant could remain on the farm. However, the situation would be reviewed in July. Adjournment Granted Lewis Henry Billington was appealed for by his employer, C. M. Dean. Billington and a lad were milking 70 cows. The land was well farmed. The Board adjourned the case sine die. Herbert Lionel Jackson, farmer, Ngutunui, appealed for his son, Herbert Lewis Jackson, who was said to be the mainstay on the farm, where 35 cows were milked. After investigating the possibility of other members of the family being able to assist on the farm, the Board dismissed the appeal, but the reservist will not be called for service before May 1.
