RACES AT CAMP

LABOUR DAY PLANS HINT MEETING AT CAMBRIDGE i FIELD EXERCISES FOR TROOPS : Officers of the Ist Battalion, 16th | Waikato Regiment, at the Cambridge 1 military camp are busily engaged in making arrangements to maintain the training of the troops a.s efficiently , as possible on Labour Day, when the unit will have to move out of the racecourse camp for one day to enable the Waikato Hunt Club to hold ; its annual race meeting. Although j the training of the men will go on, ! some inconvenience will inevitably be i created for the military authorities. j Since the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, vetoed the appeal by the Waikato Hunt Club to hold its meeting this year at the j Te Rapa course, the officers of the I regiment at Cambridge have had to make plans for training the troops j elsewhere. The men will occupy the camp during the week-end until ; Monday morning, when the regiment , will march out for field training in j the Cambridge district. The men ! will return to camp to sleep on Mon- j day night. Problem of Meals The training of the men in the j field does not present many difficul- j ties, as it is part of the normal ! schedule, but other complications j will arise because the regiment will j not have full use of the camp for the day. Full arrangements for mess- ; ing have not yet been completed. The midday meal will probably be had 1 in the field, but the troops will not j be able to return to camp for the evening meal, which will be had out- ! side. Plans for this are being pre- j pared. j While the races are on the camp j will have to be fully patrolled by troops. This will mean the posting j of many additional pickets to guard the camp equipment. The loss of this personnel on field manoeuvres will impair, to some degree, the efficiency of the exercises. Next Thursday caterers for the race meeting will have to be accommodated at the camp. They will erect a large marquee, and to pro- j vide accommodation for it the mili- : tary authorities will have to remove some of the army marquees.
