OBITUARY
CAPTAIN HUGH MONRO SHIPPING COMPANY FOUNDER (By Telegrapn.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday The death is announced of Captain Hugh Monro, chairman of directors of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, aged 78. He went to sea in the maiden voyage of the famour barque Lurline and obtained j his first command at the age of 22 I in the brig Rio Loge, running cargoes j from New Zealand to South Africa I and Mauritius and returning with ] sugar, keeping to a regular timej table of four trips round the globe I every 13 months. j In 1889. with the late Mr A. H. Turnbull, he began to accumulate a ; small fleet, commanding such wellI known vessels as the Manurewa, ! Kinclure, Timaru, Rona and Durlow, and sailing to America. Europe I and the Baltic. With Mr Turnbull ihe formed the Canterbury Steam ‘ Shipping Company in 1900 and ; brought steamers for the coastal : trade, selling the last sailing ship, j the Rona, in 1911. Captain Monro ' was chairman of the Lyttelton Hari bour Board, 1931-35.
