WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WAITER OIU-IVIATA HE RU The October meeting of the Wai-terimu-Matahuru Women’s Institute was held recently in the local hall, when there was a very good attendance presided over by the president, Mrs C. Storey. One new member was enrolled. The financial statement showed a good credit balance, and a bring and buy stall augmented funds considerably. Mrs C. Storey reported that five soldiers’ parcels had been packed and sent to the Patriotic Society and
a sixth had been posted to Mr R. Grundy, Mrs Grundy being a member of the Institute. Votes of thanks were passed to Mesdames J. Cheyne and L. Waugh (non-members), who had made gingemuts and shortbread for the parcels.
The social hour was filled with a gardening talk, much useful information and many hints being exchanged. The competition for the day, “an article made from a sugarbag.” was won by Mrs A. Scott with an embroidered cushion-cover, and Mrs J. Storey second with an apron. Best bloom results were: Mrs .T. Storey (ranunculus) 1, Mrs Newton (Iceland poppy) 2. . The hostesses were Mesdames Aldridge and Begbie. Their competition was won by Mrs Newton. OHINEWAI Th e usual monthly meeting of the Ohmewai Women’s Institute was bald i?.„ the local hall on October 3, Mrs Hill presiding over a fair at-
tendance. The secretary read two letters received from soldiers who had received parcels packed by members of this branch. They expressed great appreciation for the gifts. One from Aldershot saidUnfortunately many of the packages did not contain any message from the packers, with the result ♦l}* fP any were disappointed that they could not convey personal thanks.”

Ihe roll call, “Each member to bring something belonging to her mother,” brought forth several interesting articles, such as a penny dated 1797, an old footstool in beading and tapestry over 100 years old, and a paper called “Daybreak.” published by women for women on November 2, 1895.
