AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE HAMILTON CLUB ACTIVITIES COMMENCE TODAY NEW CLUB CAPTAIN APPOINTED The 1940-41 season of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic* and Cycle Club will commence at Hinemoa Park today, when a scratch meeting will be held. Club members will be delighted to make use of the newly-erected dressing accommodation. Members will please bear in mind that the building has been erected for the use of sports enthusiasts using Hinemoa Park, and due care must be paid to the amenities thus provided, both indoors and out. Women competitors have noted with some disappointment that no showers have been installed on their side of the building. Nevertheless the facilities at Hinemoa Park this season are an immense improvement on what was previously provided there, and the city fathers can now visit this popular ground without feeling ashamed of its conditions. New Club Captain Consequent upon R. B. Joyes taking up military duties, it became necessary to appoint a new club captain. Last year’s vice-captain. L. D. Irwin, is also an absentee, having been transferred to Auckland. Two new figures are thus given an opportunity. The new club captain is R. H. Dent, while J. Row becomes vice-captain.

Roy Dent has had considerable experience both on the track and across country. Not quite up to championship class, he is nevertheless a solid all-round performer, and, when properly attuned, a most determined finisher. Roy has a tough row to hoe in that he takes over with a depleted membership and after three

of the very best seasons the club has ever experienced. However* many of last season’s officials, particularly the president, secretary and treasurer, are still on deck, and, with the finances in a healthy state and in good hands, the new skipper can concentrate on active leadership.

That R. 11. Dent has the energy himself “Nurmi” does not doubt, but it is a mistake to do too much oneself —rather should every endeavour be made to lighten the work of our new club captain, and “Nurmi” therefore appeals to each and every member to pull his or her weight to this end. As vice-captain J. Row can be relied upon to give all the necessary assistance to his skipper. A splendid track performer, John has plenty of athletic activity ahead of him. As deputy-leader he will be invaluable in attending to routine duties. With the Dent-Row combination as our “A” string, the club faces the coming season with every confidence.
