Enrolments in both the Home Guard and Emergency Precaution Volunteer organisations can now be made with any of the persons named in the above list.

Authority to act as recruiting officers was granted by the unanimous decision of a meeting of representatives of all the local bodies in the South Auckland area on October 10. In the meantime the local bodies concerned are proceeding with the formation of the Home Guard committees as required in the regulations and it is hoped that by the time these committees are ready to function there will be sufficient enrolments for them to organise units of the Home Guard without delay. Who May Join? The Home Guard. “Any man over 16 years of age reasonably fit and willing to train.” During the training period there will be no pay but “when the emergency arises, members of the Home Guard at once become soldiers under the control of the Army with pay, equipment, etc., as in the Army.” Emergency Precaution Volunteers. —Any person (man, woman or child) may become an Emergency Precaution Volunteer provided he is not in the Air Force, Army, Navy, or the Home Guard. Members give voluntary service under their own local bodies in any eihergency, whether earthquake, flood, or war. They remain, whether in civil disaster or in war, under the control of their local body or the person appointed by their local body to take charge of civil affairs during the emergency. When to Sign Up The persons mentioned in the list of recruiting officers will receive within the next few days full details of the duties of each organisation and the separate enrolment forms for each. Service with either organisation is entirely voluntary and it is left to the individual to decide which one offers him the best opportunity to make use of his personal talents. What Happens to the Forms ? The Home Guard forms, after being signed, are to be retained by the recruiting officer, and handed over to the Home Guard committee of his district as soon as that committee is formed.

The Emergency Precaution Volunteer forms are to be retained by the district leader until enrolments in his district are complete. He is then to make up a roll for his own use and the enrolment forms are then to be deposited with the clerk of his local body.
