LILY OF GOLD
FILM ACTOR’S GRATITUDE GIFT TO CLAUDETTE COLBERT Ray Milland, who has the male lead in “Irene,” hasn’t forgotten that Claudette Colbert gave him his first real screen break. Reporting on the set of “Arise My Love,” he promptly displayed his appreciation in the form of an award. In a ceremony so brief that no one noticed, Milland presented Claudette with a small lily of gold, centred with a clear white diamond. “Just a lot of gratitude,” stammered Milland. “You know you were pretty darned kind when I was starting in pictures several years age.”
Milland, who plays opposite Claudette in her new comedy, was a bitplayer when Miss Colbert was about
to star in “The Gilded Lily” six years’ago. The actress saw tests of Milland, liked his looks and screen conduct, and asked for his assignment to a featured role. His career has advanced by leaps and bounds since that picture.
