Bernard Shaw Play in Hamilton “ You Never Can Tell,” to be staged by the Hamilton Playbox at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday. September 25 and 26, is Bernard Shaw at his wittiest, and should prove very entertaining to local audiences. The proceeds will be handed over to the patriotic funds. Ex-Hamiltonian in Palmerston Mrs Kilpatrick (Joan Parkhouse. formerly of Hamilton) is to play the feminine lead in “Dear Octopus” with the Palmerston North Repertory Society. Pageant of Empire in Hamilton Rehearsals of the Pageant of Empire are proceeding successfully in Hamilton, under the direction of Miss Phyllis Torpy. The cast will probably be announced next week. Covering all the inspiring history of Britain, the pageant should be a very spectacular production, and should have particular appeal just now, when all that Britishers hold dear is threatened by the Nazi hordes. Hamilton Magicians’ Club At the monthly meeting of the Hamilton Magicians’ Club there was a full attendance. Three new members, two from Hamilton and one from Te Awamutu, were enrolled. A good programme of paper magic was given by members. Hamilton Playbox Presentations “Double Door,” Elizabeth McFadden’s drama of the domination of a wealthy Fifth Avenue, New York, family by the elder sister, , Victoria, was read by members of the Hamilton Playbox on Wednesday night, with Mr D. Reid as producer. The determination of Victoria to keep the fortune in the family hands, ending in an attempt at murder, was the thrilling basis of the play. The parts were taken as follows: Avery, Mrs Edmonds; Telson, Mr H. J. Ferguson; Louise, Miss Edmonds; Caroline van Bret, Mrs V. Linder; Victoria van Bret, Mrs C. Henry; , Rip van Bret, Mr Stanley Carroll; [ Dr. John Sully, Mr Richard Pedrotti; j Anne, Miss Alma Burton; Neff, Mr i S. A. Cook; Lambert, Mr M. James; William, Mr Gordon Bowden; Pascoc, Mr D. Reid. Following the enjoyable reading the president, Mr W. H. Blakeway, made reference to the coming departure for camp of two members, Messrs Graham Absolum and Kenneth Sandford. and made to each the presentation of a wallet. Both in reply referred in appreciative terms to their Playbox activities. “Going Up” in Blenheim The Blenheim Operatic Society has decided to “carry on” despite the war, and has started rehearsals of the bright musical comedy, “Going Up.” Mrs Tabor-Gregory, formerly of Hamilton, is again producer. “Going Up” will be staged during show week towards the end of October.
