TOWN MAKES SILAGE
BOWLING GREENS CONTRIBUTE ONLY 100 SILOS IN ENGLAND (Times Air Mail Service) LONDON, July 25 The Mayor of Ilford, Essex, Aiderman C. Farman, will begin to fill the new concrete silo in Valentine’s Park this afternoon. Ilford is the first public authority to produce silage as a contribution to the nation’s supply of cattle food for the winter. Silage is composed of fresh grass, turnip tops and other green stuffs preserved in a large tub. This one holds about 30 tons. The silage keeps its freshness throughout the winter by the addition of molasses. Ilford is going to preserve the mowings from bowling greens and lawns. As silage has far greater nutritive value than hay it is unnecessary to provide any cake for feeding the cattle. It is estimated that if 10,000 silos were built it would not be necessary to import any cattle-feeding-stuffs at all. At present there are only about 100 in the country, and at Romford, Es-to-morrow a demonstration of silo-building will be given to farmers. This will be followed by demonstrations in other parts of the country. One advantage of a silo over a haystack is that it does not catch fire from incendiary bombs. If silos are well placed, too, they can make it difficult for airplanes to land in fields.
