GOLF IN AMERICA
THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AUSTRALIAN PLAYER BARRED JAMES FERRIER’S POSITION i United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlgat) MONTREAL, August 26 James Ferrier, the Australian golfer, has announced that he has been debarred from competing in the United States amateur championship. He said he presumed the action taken was due to the writing of his book, ‘‘Jim Ferrier’s Golf Shots.” The United States Golf Association has confirmed Ferrier’s announcement by stating that it had been forced to decline the Australian’s entry on account of his book, which “consists principally of photographs of Ferrier making his shots, accompanied by printed material of an instructive nature.” Ferrier had stated to the association that he had contracted, to receive royalties from the book, and this, therefore, made him ineligible to take pa'rt in the amateur championship.
Since he went to America a few months ago Ferrier has attracted the attention of America’s leading golf critics, who have described him as the best amateur in the world today. Following upon an excellent showing in the recent United States open championship, the Western American and other amateur events, the Australian won the Chicago amateur title last week and was a warm favourite for the more important American championship.
