Copyright) LONDON, August 17 The first Australian troops in Britain to be bombed by German . aeroplanes came through scatheless on a recent evening. A party drawn from a South Australian battalion was out on exercise when 12 German aeroplanes came over at 5000 ft. Lieutenant T. J. Schmedje, a former Melbourne chemist, ordered the men to take , cover in a ditch. Apparently they had been spotted, for three bombers dived and released eight bombs, which fell in a line parallel with the ditch, about 60yds in front of the men. One 9001 b bomb made a crater 100 ft. in circumference and 14ft. deep. Rocks and earth flew harmlessly over the troops.
