FELL INTO SEA

FATE OF GERMAN PLANE DUTCH STEAMER’S SUCCESS (Omclai Wireless) (Received August 27, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, August 26 A Dutch steamer was recently at sea off the coast of England when she was attacked by a single German aeroplane. One bomb was dropped, which missed, whereupon the aeroplane flew low and attacked the vessel with several bursts of machinegun fire. A British sailor, manning a Lewis gun, returned the fire while the ship continued her course and speed. Presently, after several bursts, it became obvious that the return fire had had effect, for the aeroplane flew off to the south-east, leaving a trail of black smoke behind it. It tried unsuccessfully to climb but stalled and fell into the sea about three-quarters of a mile distant. The Dutch steamer received superficial damage only, and on reaching its destination discharged its cargo. This is believed to be the first time that a Dutch merchantman has brought down an enemy aeroplane while it was exercising its legitimate right of defending itself against attack.
