CALVES ON WHEY
MEAT MEAL USEFUL GUIDE TO PRODUCERS Waikato farmers have been asked to rear more calves this year, but dairy farmers who have recently switched over to cheese will have to contend with extra difficulties on this account because of the fact that they will have only whey available. Calves, however, can be reared quite successfully on whey and meat meal. The following table has been found a useful guide to those who have to rely on whey:—
A salt mixture consisting of equal parts of slaked lime and ordinary salt added to the whey gives good results when fed at the rate of half a teaspoonful a feed for the first three weoks, gradually increasing to 2 teaspoonsful a feed at 5 weeks. Calves can be reared satisfactorily on this diet but it is necessary to pay strict attention to having good pas-
ture available for the calves. Calves are too often confined in an old yard or bare orchard. They should get young nutritious pasture, free from parasitic worms. Small grass paddocks recently sown and adjacent to the dairy are ideal but if no young grass is available, old pasture that has been top-dressed and spelled for several months will serve the purpose. Using the same small calf paddock year after year is a great mistake for this is one of the principal reasons for mortality among calves. Calves infected with parasitic worms are helped by dosing every 2 to 3 weeks with a reliable worm mixture. Two to 4oz. of the following mixture has been recommended: lib. of bluestone and lib. of 40 per cent nicotine Sulphate (Black Leaf 40) in 5 gallons of water.
