BOMBING OF CHUNGKING
RESUMED BY JAPANESE EVACUATION OF CIVILIANS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 24, 3.15 p.m.) CHUNGKING, August 23 The American Press reports that the Japanese have resumed the heavy bombing of Chungking. The Government is considering the compulsory evacuation of civilians, except high officials and those directly serving war needs. The voluntary departures have speeded up. The reconstruction of homes and shops which have been destroyed has been forbidden. Official relief workers said that 38 Japanese raids here this year killed 2051 civilians, wounded 3479, and destroyed 17,000 houses and shacks.
