SUNSHINE LEAGUE

WORK WELL MAINTAINED COMFORTS FOR HOSPITAL “Although it is recognised that war work has taken a firm hold of the people, other worthy works should not be allowed to be submerged,” said Mr A. L. Fow. president of the Waikato Hospital Sunshine League, at the annual meeting of the league last night. After a discussion on ways and means of carrying on its activities, the league decided to proceed as it had done for the past 21 years, it being stated that it must rely upon public contributions. The meeting was presided over by the patron, Mr J. R. Fow. “During the year the activities of the league have been well maintained.” said the president, “the outstanding feature of the work being the handing over of the wireless plant to the hospital authorities. This set is completely wired throughout the hospital and has two separate programmes available at each bedside. More headphones are needed, and as it is impossible for us to procure them at present, public donations of this nature would be appreciated.” While the wireless had taken up a good deal of time, the other activities had not been neglected. Books were collected, sorted, cleaned and distributed throughout the hospital, and sewing and knitting was carried on throughout the period under review. Owing to unfavourable weather the street collection was not as large as usual. The fireworks display was perhaps the best organised by the league, but the financial result was poor. Regular concert parties were taken to the hospital and a Christmas party was held in the Sunshine Ward. A donation was made to the Hospital Board for extra comforts for Christmas for all the patients. The balance sheet disclosed a small credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr J. R. Fow; president, Mr A. L. Fow; vice-presidents, Messrs A. L. Yule, I. Owsley, F. Findlay and Mrs F. O. Knight; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. W. Kemp; hon. auditor, Mr H. M. Leak; hon. solicitor, Mr E. V. Stace; official visitors, Mrs I. Owsley and Mr F. Empson; committee, Mesdames I. Owsley, F. O. Knight. H. J. Luxford, F. Herbert and C. J. Pearce.
