TASMAN RAIDER

VESSEL ATTACKED TURAKINA FIRED ON SEARCH IN PROGRESS NAVY AND AIR FORCE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday On Tuesday evening advice was received by wireless from the steamer Turakina in the Tasman Sea, that she was being attacked and gunned by a raider. This announcement was made tonight by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser. The message was received at 6.28 p.m. on Tuesday, giving the latitude and longitude of the Turakina at the time. “All possible steps were immediately taken by the New Zealand naval forces and the Royal New Zealand Air Force to locate and deal with the raider, and the search is continuing,” the Prime Minister said. “No further information is at present available.” The Prime Minister explained that it had not been possible to make an earlier announcement, owing to the need of preserving secrecy, so that the effectiveness of the steps being taken should not be prejudiced. The Turakina, of 8706 tons and 460 feet in length, was built for the New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, at Glasgow in 1923. She is powered by steam turbines. The master is Captain P. Laird.
