GRANT FOR HOSTEL

PROVISION FOR MAORIS GOVERNMENT DECISION BUILDING TO BE OF WOOD Grants amounting to £1625 with an additional £SO a year have been approved by the Government to- | ward the erection of a Maori Hostel ! in Hamilton, and permission has been i given for the building to be erected in wood. Details of the subsidies and grants were received last night at a meeting in Hamilton of the Waikato Maori Hostel Society, at which Mr H. W. Wilson presided. In a communication to the meeting J the Minister of Native Affairs, the i Hon. F. Langstone, stated that subi ject to the necessary authorising ! legislation being enacted, the finanI cial assistance which had been ap- | proved by the Government toward | the ebst of establishing the hostel i would be made up as follows.— i Subsidy of pound for pound up to ; £1375 for the erection of the hostel in wood, grant of £SO a year -for the maintenance of the buildings, and grant of £250 toward the cost of furniture and fittings.

The Society had £I3OO in hand. If an additional £75 could be raised it would qualify for the full Government subsidy on a pound for pound basis. Conditions of Scheme The society decided to communicate with the Minister thanking him for the generous support. It was decided, also, to agree to the conditions on which the subsidy was to be granted. They stipulate that the society will be a permanent body which will retain control of the hostel when built. The buildings will be kept fully insured and they will be erected without any outstanding liability. The property may not be mortgaged to finance maintenance. The Government will hold the title to the property when the hostel is built. The society is now in a position to take steps for the establishment of the hostel. A building sub-committee was appointed consisting of Mr H. W. Wilson, Dr. C. B. Gilberd, and Mr H. Valder to interview an architect and confer with the Maori people as to the type of building desired, and report to the next meeting. New 3lember Dr. C. B. Gilberd, Medical Officer of Health, Hamilton, was appointed a member of the society and will fill the vacancy on the board created by the resignation of Dr. H. B. Turbott, formerly Medical Officer of Health, Hamilton. The statement of accounts, showing the results of the stall held at the Waikato Winter Show, was presented, and showed that as a direct result of the stall a total of £157 14s 7d was received. The expenses of running the stall amounted to only £2 2s 6d. The small amount for expenses was due to the fact that the Waikato Winter Show Association donated the space and that many public organisations helped in providing all the goods for sale.
