OBITUARY

MR ERNEST EDWARD HAMMOND POLITICAL ASSOCIATIONS (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr Ernest Edward Hammo-nd, aged 76, of Paraparaumu, who was for many years a prominent figure in the insurance business in New Zealand. He was also well known for his association with political parties. Mr Hammond was for many years manager at Wellington of the South British Insurance Company. Later he became manager of the insurance department of Bannatyne and Company, now conducted by Messrs T. and W. Young. At the time of his death Mr Hammond was president of the New Zealand Insurance Union. He founded the New Zealand Insurance Officers’ Guild, of which he was the first president, and he was also the first president of the New Zealand Insurance Institute. Mr Hammond for many years was Dominion chairman of the Reform Party. He was largely responsible for the formation of the United Party in 1928, and he also played a part in arranging the United-Reform coalition in 1931. On the formation of the National Party in 1936 he was elected Dominion vice-president, a position he held until last year, when he relinquished the office because of his health. Mr Hammond was a brother of Mr E. H. Hammond, of Hamilton, and of the late Mr J. H. Hammond, of Hamilton. MR V. TROUNSON (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) DARGAVILLE, Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr Vivian Trounson. of Maropiu, at the age of 64. Mr Trounson had a notable record of public service. He had been a member of the Hobson County Council since 1905 and was its chairman for 25 years. He was also a member of the North Auckland Electric-Power Board and the North Auckland Land Board. Other bodies on which he had served were the Kaipara Hospital Board, the Kaipara Licensing Committee and directorate of the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company. Mr Trounson is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
