HARDSHIPS IN FRANCE
LIFTING OF BLOCKADE GUARANTEE BY GERMANY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright* (Received. August 16, 3.15 p.m.) VICHY, August 15 M. Baudouin, Foreign Minister, in a statement, said: “I am doing my utmost to persuade Britain to permit the importation of food to France. I know that Britain considers the blockade one of her best weapons. Sentiment at present does not govern the relations between States which were united by long comradeship in arms, but Britain ought to use the weapon with more consideration in view of the enormous sacrifices which France made, also France’s tragic position, in that the blockade directed against Germany through France will strike vanquished France, but its effect on Germany is problematical.
“Germany has agreed to guarantee that goods imported into France would be reserved for French civilians. If my request goes unheard all France must know that everything possible has been done to spare her privations, and must not then unjustly accuse either the Government or the occupying authorities for her misfortune.”
