HITLER AND MUSSOLINI LAMPOONED
FUN AT OVERSEAS LEAGUE PARTY DICTATORS' REASONS FOR NOT BEING PRESENT (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 16, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, August 15 The Overseas League party for Dominion servicemen celebrating the non-arrival of Hitler and Mussolini was the gayest of many celebrations. Lord Willingdon read telegrams from the guests of dishonour. Hitler telegraphed, explaining that he had started off according to plan but had been blown back by a Hurricane. He added: “Do not make too much fuss of II Duce.” Mussolini telegraphed: “All Italian sailings have been cancelled owing to secret manoeuvres in port. Heil, Fuehrer if present."’ Lord Willingdon added: “ I am sure if these gentlemen had arrived you Empire soldiers would have given them the warmest welcome.
David Low, in the Evening Standard, cartoons the ceremonial reception committee and New Zealand, Australian, African and Canadian soldiers, with bouquets disguising tommy-guns.
