TOTAL AIR LOSSES
BRITISH CLAIMS CONFIRMED ITALIAN CASUALTY LISTS (Official Wireless) (Received August 16. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 15 The Ministry of Information states that in calculating the enemy air losses the utmost care is taken to ensure that no claim is made unless it is fully substantiated by incontrovertible evidence. Striking confirmation of the conservative character of the British claims is given by the official Italian Air Force casualty lists. Thus in July, 1940, the total Italian aircraft claimed to have been destroyed by the Royal Air Force, 76, has been confirmed. Of these a number was destroyed on the ground—that is to say, without their pilots. The Italian casualty lists for July admit the loss of 76 pilots, killed or missing, the number exceeding the total claimed by the Royal Air Force. Between June 10 and August 8 the Royal Air Force claimed to have destroyed 156 aircraft, including some machines on the ground. The Italian casualty lists issued up to August 8, which probably did not include recent casualties, admitted the loss of 146 pilots, killed and missing.
