DAMAGE DONE BY BOMBS GERMAN STORY DENIED H.M.S. VICTORY NOT HIT (Ofllclal Wireless) I (Received Aug. 16, 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 15 k An Air Ministry communique issued at 9 p.m. states that further enemy attacks have taken place in several areas of the south-east this evening. Bombs were dropped on and around the Croydon aerodrome. Some damage was done but details are not yet available. On enquiry at the Admiralty it is learned that, contrary to the claim contained in a German communique that during yesterday’s attacks on Portsmouth H.M.S. Victory was hit and her flag standard blown into the sea, no damage has been suffered by H.M.S. Victory. Claims by Germany The Berlin radio alleged ' that bombers yesterday hit Nelson’s flagship, H.M.S. Victory, whose flag standard was thrown into the sea. It adds that British sailors regard this as a bad omen. The Bremen radio states: Our airmen today attacked balloon barrages at Dover, Folkestone and Lydd. So far they have shot down fourteen British fighters. Bombers flew far over British territory. The Berlin news agency says the German customs frontier has been extended to the national boundaries of Belgium, Luxemburg and France. The news agency alleges that British raiders dropped time-bombs on Amsterdam on August 13. London Area Raided Four Domiers are reported to have been shot down into the sea during an attack on a south-eastern coast town this morning. German bombers attacked the Croydon airport. , The Berlin news agency states [ fire over London indicates the \ presence of German planes. The entire Lower Thames area was raided.
