BALTIC TRADE PROBLEMS TRANSFER OF GOLD BALANCES SEEKING A SETTLEMENT (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Aueust 15, 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, August 14 Answering a question in the House of Commons, Mr R. A. Butler said the Government is considering representations from the Soviet Government, which raised an objection to the prohibition imposed by Order-in-Council on the transfer of gold balances lying in the Bank of England to the account of three Baltic States. The Soviet viewpoint is being carefully considered in the light of important legal, financial and political considerations. When asked whether the fate of the gold balances would be considered as part of a general commercial agreement with the Soviet, Mr Butler said these Baltic questions provided a problem of their own. The British Government had its point of view and interests, and he saw no reason why a settlement should not be reached.
