“WHOLESALE BREACHES”

CONTRACTORS IN COURT NINE CHARGES ANSWERED “This has the appearance of being somethi'iig in the nature of wholesale prosecutions, but it does not approach the wholesale nature of the breaches of the law which have been committed by this company,” said Traffic-Inspector C. D. Treadgold before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today when C. R. Griffin Limited, contractors, of Matamata, were charged with nine breaches of the traffic regulations. Defendants pleaded guilty to all counts.

The company was charged that on May 28 it employed a driver for longer that specified by the regulations and did not allow him ten consecutive hours’ rest in 24. Other breaches concerned with carriage of goods, which was not in conformity with the terms of the license, took place on April 30, May 10, May 13, May 28, May 29 and May 30. The company was also charged with operating a vehicle on which the load extended for more than 'nine feet behind the rear axle, and with exceeding the maximum load for which the vehicle was licensed. It was not the first time the company was charged, said Inspector Treadgold, for it had previously been before the Court on similar charges. On the first charge the company was fined 10s and costs, and on each of the six charges affecting the terms of the license, £5 and costs. Fines of 10s and costs were imposed on each of the other two charges. Other Offenders Facing two charges of employing drivers for more than eleven hours in 24, Frederick Patrick Ladd, contractor, of Hamilton, was fined 10s and costs on each count, and for operating an unlicensed ancilliary goods service, W.
