SHEEP VALDES UP

FURTHER STEEP RISE KEEN FRANKTON MARKET BEEF IN VERY BRISK REQUEST A further steep rise for fat sheep was recorded at the Frankton sale yesterday, when there was a general advance of at least 3/- to 4/- a head. Top price for wethers was 43s Gd, which was paid for a pen of heavy choice sorts. This wau 6s 6d better than last week’s highest money. Beef was in very keen request at slightly increased rates, but the fat pig market lacked the enthusiasm of recent weeks.

An average entry of fat bullocks included some heavy prime sorts, which were traded at the highest individual prices recorded at the yards this year. Top price of £l6 11s, paid j for two Polled Angus bullocks, was j £1 16s better than last week’s high- . est quotation and £1 11s higher than ! the best realisation of the previous ! week. An indication of the strength of the market was shown by the fact that a line of 10 heavy sorts were auctioned at an average price of £l6 j 3s 6d. Extra heavy sorts were quoted from £ls 5s to £l6 11s; heavy, from f. 13 7s to £l4 2s 6d; and medium, from £l2 to £l3. Best ox usually made from 36s to 38s 6d per 1001 b. Calves and boner cattle were generally very firm. The cows and heifers on offer were more mixed in quality than last week with a fair proportion of plain dairy sorts. Some extra heavy prime sorts were penned and one Shorthorn cow sold at. £l4 ss, the highest money since last spring. Another sold at £l3. Last week’s best money was £ll 12s, with £l3 2s the best the week before. While station-bred sorts showed a slight advance, the improvement was more pronounced for plainer descriptions. Extra heavy cattle were quoted from £lO to £ll 7s, and heavy from £8 17s to £9 15s; ordinary prime from £7 to £8 12s; and fat and killable from £4 7s to £6. All Classes Firmer Wethers and ewes shared in the general improvement for sheep, which were penned in approximately the same numbers as last week. All extra prime wethers made above 40s. The advance in wether values was frequently more than 3s to 4s a head, sometimes reaching ss. Extra prime wethers were quoted from 42s to 48s 6d, against 37s to 42s last week, and fat from 37s 6d to 41s 6d, in comparison with 33s to 365. Extra prime ewes were quoted from 28s 6d to 34s Gd, against 26s to 30s 6d, and fat from 25s to 27s 6d, in comparison with 22s 6d to 24s 6d. Ewes were at least 3s to 4s a head better. A short entry of mixed quality lambs made very firm to slightly firmer values. For the first time for many weeks competition was inclined to be slack for a short entry of fat pigs. No ba- - were operating and values suffered on this account. Medium porkers, which have been very dear recently, did not receive the same attention. Store pigs, however, were again very dear. Price Summary The following table is a summary of prices realised for fat stock at the Frankton yards at the last two sales:
