Miss Norma Moreland, Hamilton, ij spending a holiday in Whangarei. Mrs H. Varney, Hamilton, is visiting Auckland. Mrs F. E. Mason, Hamilton, left today for a visit to Auckland. Mrs H. T. Gillies, Hamilton, has returned from a holiday in Auckland. Mrs R. P. Cuff, Cambridge, is visiting her mother, Mrs I. E. Evans, Kaponga. « * * * Mrs H. P. Buchanan, Hamilton, leaves on Friday to spend a holiday at Waihi Beach. Mrs N. Ham has returned to Hamilton after a few weeks’ stay in OpotikL • * * * Mrs F. Nolan, Hamilton, spent the week-end with her mother, Mrs R. McFarlane, Taupiri. Miss T. Bailey, Auckland, who has been visiting Miss Betty Smith, Ohaupo, is the guest of Mrs Marsden Sayers, Hamilton. At a recent meeting of the Whatawhata branch of the Lady Galway Guild, which now has a membership of approximately 30, excellent progress was reported in the forwarding of clothing to the depot in Hamilton. Mrs R. Calder acted as secretary in the absence of Mrs C. M. Harger. • * * * The monthly meeting of the Taupiri branch of the Red Cross Society was well attended, Mrs D. Welch being in the chair. A handsome donation from the Orini Golf Club was received, and the evening was spent in cutting up linen, sewing, etc. It is hoped to hold a dance and card afternoon shortly.

The V.A.D. Corps which is being formed in connection with the Red Cross Society in Hamilton, will be under the leadership of Miss D. Menzies, lady superintendent of the Waikato Hospital, who will be commandant of the detachment. She will be assisted by four sisters. A meeting will be held tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 7.30 p.m., in the Red Cross rooms, at which all Red Cross members will be welcome.

The soldiers’ dance, sponsored by the Te Kuiti-Waitomo patriotic committee and held in the Parish Hall, Te Kuiti, in honour of the members of the third echelon, proved an outstanding success. There was a large attendance and dancing was enjoyed to Les Stout’s orchestra. In the absence of the Mayor, Mr H. T. Morton, the deputy-mayor, Mr T. M. Hetet, welcomed the men of the third echelon and wished them a safe and speedy return. * m * *

There was a representative gathering in the Motumaoho Hall on Friday night to bid farewell to Privates S. Hall, J. Gifford, N. Redshaw, M. Corbett and D. Nickle. Mr W. Stark presented the guests-of-honour with leather tobacco pouches and expressed the good wishes of all present. Four visiting soldiers were each presented with cigarettes. Private John Gifford replied on behalf of his comrades. •** ' *
