RACING

GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS

The Grand National meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will open on Tuesday and continue on Thursday and Saturday.

Bronze Step Bronze Step was produced on sixteen occasions during the 1939-40 season, winning three races and finishing in the minor money four times for £6OO in stakes.

Has Prospects at Riccarton Blue Steel’s forward running at Marton draws „pointed attention to his prospects among the hack steeplechasers at Riccarton. He is improving with every race.

A. J. Julian’s String Beau Repaire, Marshall Hall, Olympus and Laughing Fox will comprise A. J. Julian’s team in the new season and they will now sport the livery of Mrs R. T. Reid. To Be Placed Aside Lord Lynn has been returned to his owner’s property and he is likely to be placed aside indefinitely as his bleeding trouble appears to have become chronic. Come On Well The Thompson Handicap winner, Kathbella, has come in very well from her winter spell and looks more solid than ever before. She is regarded as likely to do well over middle distances next season. A Successful Year Foxsen was J. F. Tutchen’s star representative during the season just closed, her 23 starts yielding four firsts, three seconds and as many thirds, for £1235 in stakes. Shaped Encouragingly Gold Bridge, a three-year-old colt by Acre from the Tonbridge mare Pont d’Or, shaped encouragingly in the hack class at Marton, and he may be worth keeping in mind for a maiden race. Not Disgraced Schoolgirl, under the steadier of 9.3, made a bold attempt to win the Kennels Handicap at the recent Christchurch Hunt fixture and she was not disgraced in finishing right up fourth. Her turn may come next week. To School Tomorrow According to present intentions Padishah is to be schooled over the Riccarton country tomorrow and much interest will centre on his exhibition. He is said to have .suffered no ill effects from his exertions at the Christchurch Hunt last week. Taken Over b.v Owners Kriemhild and her two-year-old full-brother have left H. Dulieu’s stable, and they have been taken over by their owners, the Smith Brothers, who stated at Marton that there was every possibility that Kriemhild would be retired to the stud. , Beau Repaire Beau Repaire, who is among the active workers at Te Rapa, earned £I2OO for the A. J. Julian stable last season. He was produced on eight occasions for two wins and a second, his most important success being in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap at Trentham in January.

Youngsters in Training Among the youngsters in training at headquarters are two two-year-olds, one a filly by Tidal from Reveal, and therefore a half-sister to Royal Bachelor, and the other a half-sister to Prince Rangi by Hazrat. The former is in A. J. Julian’s stable and the other in A. Winder’s establishment.

Vaals Colt Named The name Transmitter has been registered for fhe two-year-old colt by Vaals from Telepathy, who is being trained at Ellerslie by H. Eva. Some weeks ago he had to receive surgical treatment owing to an abscess forming on an old injury on one of his hind legs, but the trouble has disappeared and he is thriving splendidly. Transmitter looks like one who might come to hand early and he has shaped well in his early sprints.

Gay Rosette Gay Rosette, who displayed promise of returning form at Rotorua recently, shaped well over half-a-mile at Te Rapa yesterday morning, finishing in front of Sieglinde and Tooley Street in 54Js, which was good time under the conditions. Gay Rosette appears all the better for those outings at Arawa Park and may be seen to better advantage the next time she is produced. Settling Down The two-year-old colt by Defoe from Pollyanna, who was recently purchased by Mr J. C. Edmonds for 450 guineas, has settled down nicely at Ellerslie and is doing his work smoothly. He is a full-brother to Anita Foe and in some respects resembles Defaulter, easily the best horse sired by Defoe. Mr Edmonds was offered a good advance on the price he paid for the colt, but declined to sell. Probably the youngster will take time to develop, but he has a likely appearance. Haughty Winner Haughty Winner drew attention to his forward condition by his impressive success in the Claremont Handicap at the recent South Canterbury Hunt fixture, coming with a devastating run over the concluding stages to snatch victory practically on the post from Nigger Boy and Kilrobe. Haughty Winner is to contest the Winter Cup next week and he will have to be taken into consideration in what promises to be a very open contest. Black Musk Black Musk has been bowling along freely in his work at Te Rapa and yesterday morning he again impressed by soundly accounting for Gaine’s Choice over a circuit of the course proper in the satisfactory time of 2.15. J. L. Muir is deserving of very credit for the condition of the Musketoon gelding, who was barely in six weeks prior to winning so convincingly in his initial essay over hurdles at Rotorua recently. Muir is again getting a select team around him and he should win his share of races in the new term.
