LATE MR REID

HARBOUR BOARD SERVICE

EXPRESSIONS OF CONDOLENCE MR A. S. SUTHERLAND'S POST (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Tuesday The death of Mr R. T. Reid, who died suddenly on July 26, two months : after being elected chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, was the subject of messages of condolence received at the board’s meeting to-day. The deputy-chairman, Mr H. Luke, who was later elected chairman, said that relations between members of the board had always been most cordial, and Mr Reid’s death came as a shock to all of them. His pleasing personality and kindly nature had won for him a wide circle of friends, and they would all miss him greatly. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and the town clerk, Mr J. Melling, who attended the meeting, joined with members in standing as a mark of respect. A resolution was adopted placing on record the board’s high appreciation of the long and faithful service rendered by Mr Reid, not only to the port but also to the province of Auckland, and extending to Mrs Reid the sympathy of members. Letters of condolence were received from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, Cabinet Ministers, harbour boards and associations, shipping and other companies, the Consular Corps, the services and aquatic clubs. The new chairman, Mr Hendry Luke, was a member of the board’s engineering staff before entering business. Mr A. S. Sutherland Elected For the post of deputy-chairman, to which Mr Luke was elected in May, Mr A. S. Sutherland, of Ngaruawahia, and Mr J. B. Donald were nominated. Mr Sutherland was elected by eight votes to four. Representing the counties of Raglan, Waipa and Waikato and the borough of Huntly, Mr Sutherland has been a member for nearly nine years. He has been prominently connected with numerous public and sporting bodies in the Waikato. It was reported to the board that power to fill the seat held by the late Mr Reid, as representative of the boroughs of Hamilton, Ngaruawahia, Cambridge and Te Awamutu, was vested in the Governor-General. Mr Luke said he thought it outside the board’s province to recommend a successor to Mr Reid. Possibly it might be open to the boroughs concerned.

It was decided to notify the Minister of Marine, the Hon. D. G. McMillan, that a vacancy had occurred.
