WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

OHINEWAI The monthly meeting of the Ohinewai Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently, Mrs M. O. Hill presiding over a fair attendance of members and visitors. Mrs Perry read the golden thread, “Back to the Army, News of Miss from Home and' Country. Mrs McCiaughran gave a very interesting and lengthy report of the Council meeting held in Wellington last month, which was much appreciated by all. The bring and buy was well patronised and the funds benefited considerably. Winners of competitions were as follows:—Tray cloth, Mrs J. Ralph 1, Mrs P. Mawston 2; best bloom, Mrs Lynch. The roll-call, “If not living in New Zealand where would one like to live and why?” was most interesting. Mrs Shotbolt presented the Institute with a beautiful clock for use at meetings. The hostesses for the day were Mrs Fisher, Mrs J. Ralph and Mrs M. Ralph. WAITOA The Waitoa Women’s Institute held its annual concert and dance in the local hall on Saturday evening. The president, Mrs H. Kerr, extended a hearty welcome to all. The concert programme was as follows:—Solos. Mrs O. Cooper; mime, given by Mesdames A. Sowter, I. Jensen, J. Bigwood, H. Kerr; play, Mesdames A. Johnston, A. E. Blackwell, J. Lynch, W. Pollock, H. Blomfield, S. Hyde, A. McGuilp and Miss E. Arnold; concerted item, Institute members; elocution, Miss P. Luxton; play, Mesdames J. §. Wathen, H. Kerr, R. Malcolm, Misses E. Arnold, P. and M. Luxton; patriotic item, Institute members; mime; musical novelty, Mesdames H. Kerr, and H. Blomfield; song, Mrs O. Cooper and members of the Institute. At the conclusion of the concert, supper was served by the members, after which dancing was enjoyed. Mrs Kerr expressed thanks on behalf of the Institute for the support given and to all who had assisted towards the success of the function. JUBILEF

The Jubilee Institute recently held its fifth birthday. After the introduction of members, which was by way of a competition, the president, Mrs King, wished every one a happy afternoon, and asked all to stand in siience in respect to our fighting comrades. During the afternoon the following programme was enjoyed:— Pianoforte solo, Mrs Mclndoe;

musical monologues, Mrs Wilson; song, Mrs Burgess; Miss Joan Fowle, Russian dance. Five members of the Drama Circle, Mesdames Wilson, Webley, Hogarth, King and Pitman, entertained in a most amusing play. Mrs King took the opportunity to present Mrs J. W. Chapman, president of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes, with a small token in appreciation of her services.

During the serving of afternoon tea, the candles on the birthday cake, which had been contributed by Mesdames Kerr, Winter, Sandos, and Thornley, were lit by Mrs C. Fisher. Mrs A. Fisher blew them out and Mrs Kerr cut the cake. Competitions were won by Mrs Wood (Whitiora), Mrs Hales (Nawton-Rotokauri) and Mrs Christian (Waitoa).

TAUPIRI The Taupiri Women’s Institute held its July meeting in the Taupiri Hall, recently, when there was a good attendance of members and friends. Members passed a vote of sympathy to Mrs R. Sweetman in her recent bereavement. The president, Mrs McDowall, presided and a happy meeting took place. The Institute had recently sent twelve parcels to the soldiers, and in the morning of the monthly meeting members and friends gathered at 10.30 and served for the Lady Galway Guild. It was decided to have plain afternoon teas during wartime. Mr Cook gave an interesting talk on first aid and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The flower competition was won by (senior) Mrs G. Powell and (juniors), Mrs Brooks.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Catley, F. C. Wilson, Baucke, F. Hirwood, R. Hirwood and Moss. After two items by Mrs J. C. Black the meeting closed.
