OBITUARY

MRS J. C. RETTER CENTENARIAN OF LEVIN LEVIN, Tuesday The death has occurred at Levin of Mrs J. C. Retter, familiarly known as “Granny” Retter, in her 101st year. For over 50 years Mrs Retter had led an active life in Levin. She is survived by one son, Mr F. Retter, of Hamilton, and three daughters, Mrs J. W. Procter (Te Horo, Levin), Mrs John Roach (Shannon), and Mrs H. Gill (Levin). There are 37 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Mrs Retter’s husband died in 1926. The funeral took place on Sunday at the Levin Cemetery, and was largely attended. MR L. ALLEN (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Tuesday The death has occurred of Mr Leonard Allen, a well-known business man of Te Aroha, at the age of 53. Mr Allen, who was born and spent his life in Te Aroha, was a keen Rugby enthusiast and had taken an active interest in the game for many years. He played for Te Aroha when the local competitions were controlled by the Piako Union. Later he was co-selector with Mr D. Borrie, and afterward sole selector. For a period Mr Allen was a selector of the Te Aroha representative teams. Upon the formation of the Te Aroha Club, Mr Allen was unanimously elected the first president. He was for some time a member of the Te Aroha Bowling Club. Mr Allen is survived by one daughter, Miss Betty Allen, of Te Aroha. CAPTAIN DONALD McLEAY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DARGAVILLE, Tuesday Captain Donald McLeay, the harbourmaster, who entered the public hospital last night for an abdominal operation, died this morning about an hour after he had left the operating theatre. Captain McLeay had been harbourmaster about three years. He served in the South African War and the Great War. He is survived by his wife and a son.
