TREES PLANTED
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION CEREMONY AT TAUHEI (Special to Times) TAUHEI, Monday A large crowd gathered at the Tauhei Hall to celebrate the New Zealand Centenary* The celebrations took the form of an Arbor Day, and a number of trees was planted in the vicinity of the hall. The trees were the gift of the Piako County Council and consisted mostly of natives. The organiser of the scheme was the Hall Committee, assisted by the Young Farmers’ Club and the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The planting was supervised by Mr R. A. S. Browne, of Tauhei. The Tauhei School was given a half-holiday and the scholars attended the ceremony, accompanied by Mr Harrie, headmaster, and Miss Shepard, assistant mistress. The opening ceremony was held in the hall, which was crowded. Mr A. E. Gee, president of the Hall Society, welcomed the visitors. The Mayor and Mayoress of Morrinsville, Mr and Mrs W. Hetherington, Mr W. C. Kennedy, chairman of the Piako County Council, and the riding member, Mr Stark, were present. Mr Gee thanked the Piako Council for the donation of trees and for the interest displayed by Messrs Kennedy and Stark in the Tauhei celebration, the former for his private donation of trees, and Mr R. A. S. Browne for his great assistance, also the Young Farmers’ Club and the Women’s Division. The Mayor addressed the meeting and Messrs Kennedy, Stark, J. Noble, R. A. S. Browne, W. Taverner and and H. J. Valentine also spoke. In the hall grounds the trees were planted and dedicated, and in the hall the Women’s Division served out afternoon tea.
