TOPICS OF THE DAY
Service Gladly Given
“Millions of people have been afflicted with a deepening and deadening sense of frustration at the absence of the summons to make their contribution toward a supreme national effort, says an English newspaper. They were acutely conscious of the immense leeway that had to be made up in order to outstrip the preparations of the enemy and to hasten the day of victory. Yet all around them they saw evidences of the frittering away of resources through idleness, short time or misdirection of employment. Now that the call to forthright action has been made they will respond not merely with cheerfulness, but with exhilaration. It is Britain’s characteristic reply to Hitler's lightning bid for mastery. The struggle now before us will only be won by the utter devotion of those who fight for us by land, air and sea. That will be given proudly. We have no right to it, and even their most heroic sacrifices will not save us, unless we, behind the battle, develop every resource of the country, man and woman power, machine power and wealth to furnish them aircraft, tanks and munitions to match and overmatch the German armament.”
