BAN ON CONFETTI BRITISH CLERGY REJOICE At the end of June a ban on confetti became effective in England. This was a matter for rejoicing among the clergy, who fervently hope that the ban will not be lifted till the conclusion of the war. It might not be easy to discover who first imported into England and associated with marriage the throwing of confetti, which was part of the carnival licence in Italy and elsewhere, but the habit has reached great proportions in spite of numerous protests. It is not likely that any of the substitutes will remain either. It would be positively criminal to throw rice at a wedding nowadays, and presumably the artificial “rose leaves” which are sometimes substituted for confetti will disappear also. There will remain only the conventional slipper, which can hardly be regarded as waste, since it is generally picked up again. But churchyards and pavements will be saved from unpleasant litter and brides and bridegrooms will be spared discomfort.
