DRAMATIC FINISH

BOXING IN HAMILTON KNOCK-OUT IN SECOND ROUND CALTAUX BEATS ROBERTSON Ending with a dramatic suddenness which characterised some of Joe Louis’ world title bouts, the professional welter-weight boxing contest between Vic Caltaux (Auckland) and Henry Robertson (Auckland), which was held under the auspices of the Hamilton Boxing Association in the Frankton Town Hall last night, had hardly got under way properly before the referee had to raise Caltaux’s hand for a win on a knock-out. The end came in the second round, after three minutes and 35 seconds of actual fighting time when Caltaux connected with a heavy short right to the jaw and put his opponent on to the mat for a few minutes longer than the necessary ten seconds. The bout was scheduled to go over ten three-minute rounds and, while it did last, it gave promise of providing exciting fighting in which each man would keep the pace merry. Both men weighed in at lOst 61b and the contest marked Robertson’s debut in professional ranks. The fixture drew a fairly good attendance. Caltaux Takes Initiative Crouching low and driving his left straight and hard to the solar plexus, Caltaux took the initiative from the outset, but he did not seem to worry Robertson who, fresh from the amateur ranks in which he had a good record, delivered several hard blows to the head. He was steady on his feet during the opening stages and, punching hard, he staggered Caltaux against the ropes with a fast blow to the head. Caltaux came back fiercely and the next few seconds saw the two exchanging blow for blow in rapid succession. However, it was clear that Caltaux, with his wider experience in professional boxing, was watching for a short route to the decision and it seemed as though he had it when, just before the close of the first round, he felled Robertson with a right swing to the head. Although he was groggy when he got up and went to his corner for the spell, Robertson appeared quite fresh when he came out for the second round and seemed likely to carry his share of the fight. However, Caltaux was quick to take an opening and the end came after the round had gone 35 seconds when a short right caught Robertson on the point of the jaw and laid him on his back for a knock-out. The referee was Mr W. Cuthbertson. Amateur Preliminaries The results of the amateur preliminaries were as follows: Featherweights.—R. Muir (Hamilton) Bst 81b beat H. Branton (Hamilton), Bst 131 b, on points. Catchweights.—W. S. Nicholson (Hamilton), lOst 61b, beat I. Speedy (Hamilton), lOst 91b, on points. V. Dye (Matamata) 7st 71b, beat J. Cameron (Hamilton), Bst 21b, on points. Lightweights. —I. Cruickshank (Hamilton), 9st 61b, beat Scotty White (Papakura Camp), 9st 131 b, on a technical knock-out. The referee for the preliminaries was Mr C. Vernall. The cup for the most scientific boxer, donated by Mr Bert Ennis, was awarded to I. Cruickshank.
