TWO CHANGES MADE MATCH AGAINST AUCKLAND Waikato’s team to play the return match against the Auckland representatives in Hamilton on Saturday was announced to-day. Paterson (Hamilton), A. J. Aitken (Morrinsville), C. Perkins (Hamilton). Five-eigths: R. Everest (Hamilton), L. G. Reece (Hamilton). Halfback: W. Brown (Matamata). Back Row: W. F. Daniell (Waipa). Middle Row: S. Satherley (Hamilton), A. Thompson (Waipa), E. B. Macky (Waipa), W. H. Warrender (Matamata). Front Row: P. J. Farren (Taupiri), E. H. Catley (Taupiri), J. M. Tayior. (Taupiri). Reserves: W. Carroll (Matamata), R. Ahem (Hamilton), J. S. McLean (Hamilton), M. Hewitt (Cambridge), O. Elliott (Hamilton). THREE VICTORIES ! WAIKATO RUGBY RECORD FIXTURES AGAINST AUCKLAND Throughout the Auckland Province great interest has always centred in the Rugby fixtures each season between Auckland and Waikato representative teams. Next Saturday the return match for this year will be played at Rugby Park, Hamilton, and Waikato will be anxious to reverse the run of defeats which have extended since Auckland was last beaten at Hamilton in 1933. Waikato’s record against Auckland is ; not imposing, but at least it is exi tremely interesting. ■ History records that Waikato first : played Auckland as long ago as 1873, ; when the result was a draw. The ! Auckland Rugby Union was not i formed until 1883, but for a long j time no games were apparently played against Waikato. The fixture again came into the picture of Rugby records in 1906, but little prominence j was given to the games because ; Waikato was but an obscure country : union whose “gate appeal” was insignificant. Challenge For Ranfurly Shield Embracing a large district including nearly all the territory south of | Auckland, the South Auckland | Rugby Union was formed in 1910. ! In 1911 an unsuccessful challenge j match was played against Auckland for the Ranfurly Shield. It was 1924 before the two unions were playing regular representative matches, although two years before ; that a fixture paved the way to the J now popular games. It was then i that Auckland visited Hamilton and ! won by 11 points to 3. Old-timers ; in the Waikato will remember that Jack O’Brien was the then-prominent I Waikato fullback. j Waikato suffered a heavy defeat ! in 1924 in the game at Auckland when the city representatives won by 44 points to 12. Names famous in the annals of Rugby graced the ; official programme on that occasion, j There were A. E. Cooke, F. W. i Lucas, V. Badeley and Don Wright among Auckland’s brilliant backs. : The same season, however, a return ! game was played at Hamilton and Waikato was unfortunate not to turn j the tables against Auckland, which j won by only 9 points to 5. Waikato's Best Fullback I | Wherever Waikato Rugby reminiscences are discussed the name of 1 Stan Thomas always comes into the tale. As a fullback he was renowned, and certainly he was the best custodian Waikato has ever fielded. He played in the match against Auckland in 1925, when Waikato was beaten by 35 points to 0. The King’s Birthday has become the date of the annual match between the two unions at Hamilton, | though this year the postponement of the holiday observance led to an | alteration in the date of the Hamilton match. The King’s Birthday first became an Auckland-Waikato date in 1926, Auckland winning at Hamilton by 36 points to 3. The year 1927 was an important occasion for Waikato in the history of its Rugby engagements with Auckland, for in that year the team won for the first time, the score being 11 points to 5. Regular home and away games were commenced in 1928 but were suspended from 1933 ! until 1936. Record Since 1927 Waikato’s record against Auck-
