NINTH DUKE

HIGH CLASS SIRE STANDING AT TE RAPA Commencing his second season at the Te Rapa stud is the young Blandford sire Ninth Duke. Ninth Duke had a successful season at the stud last term and his first crop of foals are due this season and should attract much interest. Ninth Duke has developed into a handsome stallion and like other sons of his sire he should prove himself a high-class sire. Ninth Duke’s pedigree is a very attractive one, his dam Goddess of Mirth was by Black Jester (a St. Leger winner and half-brother to Absurd, five times champion sire in New Zealand and Jest, dam of Chief Ruler), from Minerva, a St. Trusquin mare who bred four winners. Minerva was half-sister to King John, while her dam was a full-sister to the immortal Pretty Polly. Ninth Duke was a winner in England and France and was placed on ten occasions. In France as a two-year-old he was placed second to Mistress Ford in a 26.000-franc race and third to Mistress Ford and Gong in a 86,000-franc event. Mistress Ford and Gong were the champion juveniles of the year. Ninth Duke is typically Blandford and is suitably bred to mate with mares of most New Zealand strains and should be especially suited to those bred from Chief Ruler and Absurd.
