WOMEN’S DIVISION

KAWHIA BRANCH There was a large attendance of members and friends at the June meeting of the Kawhia branch of the Women’s Division held at the residence of the president, Mrs W. W. Davies who had also invited all interested in forming a patriotic committee. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs A. O. Rice in her recent accident and to Mrs R. Nesbit, secretary of the branch, who is ill. Mrs Allen kindly acted as secretary. Dealing with a phamplet regarding Dominion conference, a discussion resulted in a unanimous vote in favour of conference being held as usual. It was decided to donate the Women’s Division birthday cake to be raffled for patriotic funds. Mrs Schnackenberg brought the finished quilt made from peggy spares, by members, to be sent to the Kawhia Cottage Hospital, for the use of the patients. £3 was donated for soldiers’ parcels. Mrs Davies explained Lady Galway’s appeal for clothing for refugees and all present agreed to work for this cause. Mr and Mrs Rex Nesbit’s offer of rooms in Tainui for Women’s Division and patriotic use for the duration of the war was accepted with thanks, also the Deaconess room at the Parsonage offered by the Rev. and Mrs Wineata. Offer of the loan of a sewing machine by the Anglican Ladies’ Guild was accepted with thanks. After the Women’s Division meeting Mrs Davies proposed that a patriotic committee be formed and asked Mr Goldsbro, secretary of the Kawhia inter-zone of the Auckland provincial patriotic council, to explain the ruling of the patriotic council. Mr Goldsbro’ kindly gave an outline of the activities and was accorded a vote of thanks. A patriotic welfare league was then formed, Mrs Allen being elected president and Mrs R. Ward secretary. A working committee was then set up. The Women’s Division and the newly-formed league pledged themselves to co-operate with one another. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Davies for the use of her room. Afternoon tea was then served.
