GIFTS COMMISSIONER

FUNDS FOR THE FORCES VIEWS AS TO ADMINISTRATION (By Telegraph.—Pre«s Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Dominion Farmers’ Union conference congratulated Lieut.-Colonel the Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C., on his appointment as Overseas Gifts Commissioner. Speakers agreed he was the best man in New Zealand for the job, and wished him success. Replying, Lieut-Colonel Waite mentioned that during the last war some proportion of the funds was spent upon offices and buildings, but his conception was that the funds were for the soldiers, sailors and nurses of the fighting forces. He hoped it would be possible to arrive at a method whereby a committee of all ranks would decide what was required. instead of the decision being made far away by persons not aware of the conditions under which the forces were operating.
