Reporters listened in on ear phones. Finally, after running up a big phone bill, he talked to a “Signor Starace.” who said he was secretary to Count Ciano of Italy. Pickus told him he wanted Mussolini to call a conference among European nations to stop the war. Pickus has made numerous long-distance calls to European leaders in the past.
