PATRIOTIC EFFORTS

ORINI DISTRICT GIVING j TOTAL RAISED EXCEEDS £250 i (Special to Times) ORINI, Monday Outstanding success accompanied the latest effort by the Orini district to raise money for the Red Cross Fund, the occasion being a concert and mock court conducted by the Orini Red Cross Committee. The concert programme consisted of items by a visiting concert party from Ngaruawahia organised by Mrs Tarplet, secretary of the Ngaruawahia sub-centre of the Red Cross, ' assisted by Mrs James Garnham. The accompanists were Mrs Tarplet and Mrs L. Smith. The organisation of the mock court was in the hands of the local committee. The court officials were.— Judge, Mr Laurie Austen; Prosecutor. Mr Ray Austen: Clerk of the Court, Mr J. Garnham; Chief Constable, Mr W. Aiken; Constables, Messrs A. Lornie, S. Magan, A. Austen, J. Mulligan; Registrar, Mr F. Denham. Few escaped the arm of the law. the fines ranging from £lO for “really serious” offences down to 2s 6d. As a result of the evening £92 10s was raised. Recently Wages Drive was conducted, and due to the untiring i of Mr W. Lowe, the committee was responsible for the collection

of £SO 10s 6d. Further sums of £8 10s and £lO were donated by the Orini Sports Club and Orini Dramatic Club respectively, so that the total raised for the Red Cross to date is in the vicinity of £l6O. 1 At the same time the Orini Patrii otic Fund Committee has been exceptionally busy and as a result of j a Stock Drive and various dances ! and other functions £95 has been collected. Thus Orini may feel justly proud of its total effort of over £250. Much of the credit for this achievement must go to Mrs F. Denham whose energy and organising ability j as secretary of both the Red Cross ‘ and the Patriotic Committee has afforded the residents every opportunity oi demonstrating their generosity.
