FOUND SINKING
FATE OF A LINER HELP BY FLYING=BOAT RESCUE OF SURVIVORS (Oniciai wireless) (Received July 5, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, July 4 It is revealed that the Blue Star liner Arandora Star, which was torpedoed by a U-boat, was found sinking by a Sunderland flying-boat of the Coastal Command of the Royal Air Force a considerable distance from the west coast of Scotland and to the north-west of Ireland. The captain of the aircraft saw scattered on the water 13 life-boats full of survivors, as well as survivors on rafts and others clinging to floating debris. The Sunderland circled low and dropped first-aid outfits and food on board, including emergency rations, also the crew’s cigarettes and tobacco. Having seen the survivors pick these up, the Sunderland went in search of assistance and guided a destroyer to the scene. It was 11 a.m. when the Arandora Star was first sighted and three hours later a destroyer arrived and began to pick up the survivors.
